After reading through comments, apparently there is a common issue with transaction error messages and being charged without notification. I also got error message when purchasing show tickets, so made second purchase that was redeemed without knowing first purchase went through. Groupon must be making quite a bit of revenue through double charges. I was denied refund for first purchase, though it is clear I was unaware of transaction. Will NEVER use Groupon again and hopefully warn others to not get burned by these tricky tactics.
